Salsa, sombreros and tequila - Mexico, Panama and South America are a feast for the senses with something different for every kind of traveller.
Cruise season:
Mexico is a year round destination due to balmy weather with temperatures in the mid 20C most of the year. August and September are hotter, with temperatures in the 30s, coupled with high humidity. Most cruises to Panama and Central America sail in the Northern winter months from October to April. Major cruise lines visit South America between September and March, while specialty cruises operate year round. The South American dry season is from October to June which is when cruises to the Amazon operate. Santiago and Buenos Aires are Mediterranean in climate and enjoy warm summers with mild winters. However cruises that go round the Horn can experience much colder temperatures even in the height of summer.
Departure ports:
Cruises to Mexico generally start in either Los Angeles or San Diego and the key ports visited are Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas, Acapulco and Manzanillo. Panama and Central America have the main ports as Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Los Angeles and San Diego. Cruises to the Amazon and the north of South America depart from orFt Lauderdale, San Juan, Bridgetown, Rio or Buenos Aires. Additionally the longer cruises can start from as far away as Southampton, Los Angeles. Cruises around Cape Horn and on the east coast start from Valparaiso, Buenos Aires or Rio de Janeiro.
