Skopelos, Greece, was the main location setting for the movie Mamma Mia! and is now the subject of curiosity for tourists - and ABBA fans!
A quiet island of pines and orchards – the greenest island in Greece – Skopelos has fabulous beaches known for their crystal clear waters. Most of the large sandy beaches of Skopelos are well-organised with sun beds, umbrellas and water sports but many deserted beaches and coves can be found, with crystal-clear waters and pebbles.
The capital of the island is also the main harbour, a real jewel built amphitheatrically in the heart of a bay. White painted houses with tiled roofs line narrow paved alleys and there are around 130 churches hidden in the town. Now designated a preservation area, there are few shoddy concrete bunkers here as the town escaped earthquake damage and wartime attacks by Nazis. Buildings are embellished with balconies, wrought iron trellises, brightly painted shutters and a jungle of flowering plants.
